Phil yer boots!

To the brim!

Phil Finnimore is an Australian living in Byron Bay, formerly in Singapore, which is when I first started working with him to get his training plan sorted, whcih must have been a good 7 or 8 years ago.

In that time we got him ready for two World Gran Fondo Champs, snagged a win in his age group at the Tour de Bintan, even managed to meet in person when he came down to Hualien with his wife – always lovely as a ‘long-distance’ coach to meet my clients in person.

He took a break from coaching for a year or two with some health issues, but got in touch a few months back, looking to get ready for the 2024 Tour de Brisbane. Coming from a period of relative inactivity, we got him on the Ol’ Z2 for a while, whilst also keeping an eye on improving his climbing ability, as the TdB has 1,239m elevation over the 112km, and it’s almost all packed into the last 20km.

What was so good about this training block was that we had a clear go at the whole way through – no form wobbles, no illness, no lack of motivation – nada.

As a result, his fitness improved rapidly and he managed to get to his 2021, pre-illness numbers, and then beyond.

He managed to finish the Tour de Briz in just under 4 hours – the stated goal – and got an astonishing 92 PRs along the way!

I’m not one to focus on age but, has to be said, Phil is the ripe young age of 75. Incredible.

Wonderful stuff!

  1. Hope Phil doesn’t push too hard, too many masters suffering from AFIB.

  2. Crushed it! Well done to Phil, that’s awesome. 👍
