Cyclists Are OFFICIALLY Smarter & COOLER Than Everyone Else

Science is showing that the benefits of cycling go far beyond strong legs and a healthy heart. When we pedal, our body delivers more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain, helping neurons work better and boosting overall cognitive performance — including memory, reasoning, and planning.

Cycling also increases the production of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a protein that acts like fertilizer for the brain — helping grow new brain cells and protecting existing ones, which supports long-term mental sharpness.

Regular riders often have more resilient brains. Research links cycling with greater gray matter volume, especially in the hippocampus — the part of the brain central to memory and learning — and even a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared with less active lifestyles.

And have a look at this – very cool!

This is how they recorded it, and if you want to read more, link of the full study is here.

And this is even cooler… I Googled ‘are cyclists the smartest athletes’ and got this:

While there is no definitive scientific consensus that cyclists are the absolute “smartest” athletes compared to all other sports, they are frequently cited for having high levels of mental acuity, tactical intelligence, and cognitive function. Research and surveys often highlight cyclists as having superior mental sharpness, with one survey even suggesting people perceive them as more intelligent.

Here is a breakdown of why cyclists are associated with high intelligence and mental aptitude:

  • Tactical Thinking and Decision Making: Road cycling is compared to a high-speed game of chess. Riders must constantly analyze race situations, manage energy, make split-second safety decisions, and understand complex team tactics while under intense physical exhaustion.
  • Cognitive Benefits: Studies have indicated that cyclists possess superior cognitive function and “younger” brain profiles compared to the average person, with exercise increasing blood flow to the brain and enhancing memory and problem-solving skills.
  • Mental Toughness: Cycling, particularly long-distance endurance racing, requires extreme mental discipline, focus, and the ability to endure, which some studies suggest makes them top-tier in mental toughness.
  • Perceived IntelligenceA survey by the British Heart Foundation found that respondents believed cyclists to be 13% more intelligent and “cooler” than other people.

It’s OFFICIAL! Ha!

Beyond the biology, cycling engages your brain with navigation, strategy, and split-second decisions, strengthening neural connectivity. Plus, the rhythmic motion and fresh air can help lower stress and improve mood, giving both mental and emotional benefits.

So next time you debate whether to go for a ride — remember you’re not just training your body, you’re boosting your brainpower and investing in long-term cognitive health…

And your street cred!
