Cycling Weekly of the UK did some investigating into Tour team tires, and came up with a number of 350, which seems a lot – but no, it doesn’t, when you think. about it – so I calculated for myself and it’s much higher.
Vittoria-sponsored teams (eight of them say CW, it is in fact 6) swap out roughly 32-56 tyres per squad across the race — call it 270 Vittorias.
UAE Emirates-XRG, on Continental’s GP5000 TT TR, reckon they’ll get through 30-40 tyres themselves, purely based on road conditions and damage rather than a fixed schedule. Average 35 per team, 6 teams using them, this is 210.
Here’s the team list and the tires they run:
The remaining 17 teams are split across five other tyre brands:
| Tyre Brand | Teams | Teams |
|---|---|---|
| Continental | 6 | UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Bahrain Victorious, Decathlon CMA CGM, Groupama-FDJ United, Movistar, Uno-X Mobility |
| Vittoria | 6 | Visma-Lease a Bike, Lidl-Trek, EF Education-EasyPost, Ineos-Netcompany, Pinarello-Q36.5, NSN Cycling Team |
| Specialized | 2 | Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, Soudal Quick-Step |
| Cadex | 2 | Team Jayco-AlUla, Alpecin-Premier Tech |
| Pirelli | 2 | Lotto-Intermarché, Tudor Pro Cycling |
| Michelin | 3 | Cofidis, Team Picnic PostNL, TotalEnergies* |
So that’s another 9 teams using say 36 tires per team, which is 324.
Grand total approx. 804 tires per tour.
Conti’s TT TR tire is 110 euro.

So we are talking roughly 88,440 Euros spent on tires at this year’s Tour!
“Tyres are cleaned and checked every evening after each stage and replaced approximately every three to five days depending on the road conditions,” says Tommaso Cappella, project manager and team liaison at Vittoria. “With the new tyre, sealant is also applied fresh, to guarantee the best safety and performance.”
That’s a lot of sealant, a lot of rubber and a lot o’ cash!
