How Often Should You Change Your Helmet?

1–2 minutes

read

Most helmet manufacturers say replace your cycling helmet every 3-4 years — but is that actually based on science, or just a way to sell more helmets?

Turns out, the foam itself holds up surprisingly well. Studies have tested helmets up to 26 years old and found the protective EPS foam doesn’t significantly degrade with age alone.

What does cause real damage:

  • UV exposure drying out the glues holding everything together
  • Leaving your helmet in a hot car
  • Bug spray and sunscreen sprayed near the shell
  • Humidity and sweat

The one rule that’s absolutely non-negotiable though is – if your helmet hits the ground in a crash, replace it right away.

Living somewhere very humid, as I do in Taiwan, basically means your helmet is working harder than one sitting in a mild European climate, so it makes sense to be a bit more proactive about replacement and maintenance., which can weaken them over time in ways that aren’t always visible.

Practical tips if you’re in a humid environment:

  • Rinse the helmet (especially removable pads) with clean water after every ride — don’t just leave it sweaty on a shelf
  • Let it dry fully in a ventilated spot, but out of direct sun
  • Check straps and the retention cradle more regularly for signs of wear or stiffness
  • You might want to lean toward the 3-year replacement mark rather than stretching to 5
