One response to “the Frenchies fix Le Tour! vive les Frenchies!”

Yep, Agreed, that the next TdF is tipped toward the Frenchies, and fair play to them. I think that Froome has started the game of “No, YOU are the favourite” early. The odds of him missing the TdF are exactly zero.

SKY had a disastrous TdF, where all their weaknesses showed up in a single race. Their unimaginative style of team building that emphasizes a single man surrounded by talented riders who are forced into a specific domestique role, means that when their man goes down, the replacement guys are just not prepared to ride as a leader. There almost total absence of tactical improvisation has been well documented, and they just could not come up with another script hen the first one went in the bin- related to the robotic (but brilliantly effective at times) way that they train. The embarrasing lack of bike handling skills, positioning sense (when not lining it out on a consistently graded 6% Alpine pass) and “feel” for the peloton also came back to bite them, and without their slightly dodgy use of various drugs (inhalers, tramadol? Magic TUEs for cortisol) the SKY fell this summer. Hard.

Consequently, of course Froome will ride the TdF and ride it to win. SKY has a global presence and Jaguar, and 20th Century Fox and Rapha and ESPECIALLY Pinarello and Shimano all want a TdF win, so that’s the end of THAT discussion. Besides, Ellingworth has already said that they will be bringing their best team to the race and will race to win, so who will lead them? Nieve? Richie Porte? Koenig? Stephen Roche’s kid? I don’t think so. Additionally, Froome IS an elite-elite climber who was smashing Alberto Contador on Mt Ventoux not all that long ago and who came second in a brutally hilly Vuelta (while on admittedly poor form) even more recently, so this nonsense of the TdF being for the climbers (while accurate) makes no never mind to Froome-dawg.

I think that Froome is likely considering the Giro Tour Double, as are all the major GT contenders (except for Quintana who has been there done that, needs to get a TdF on the Palmares, and is almost a decade younger than the big 3) because they know that as much as AC has *already* put them in the shade (The man has more GT wins than Nibali, Quintana and Froome COMBINED), if he were to “Nibali” the Giro (Win it because the best guys were not racing him) and then recover in time to give people a run for the money at the TdF and even win it (Why not? the man won the Vuelta on poor form, a cracked leg, sub-optimal preparation and mistakes by his rivals), it would immediately make Nibali and Frome look like Jupiter. Impressive, but just one of many planets revolving around the Contador Sun, and who wants that?

So rest assured, Froome will be at the TdF. At this point, I do not see hm giving the Giro a crack. SKY’s racing MO has been to bring their guys in in hot racing form at the beginning of the year, try to win everything in sight, increase their fitness with specific training and selective racing, and then bring everyone in for a coffee and cuddle at the end of July (Have we even seen a SKY rider at the pointy end in TDLombardia or WC’s??). It will tke a LOT of powerpoint sides to get the SKY robots to organise 2 seperate peaks for Froome so closely spaced, and improvisation is not a key SKY skill. It will not be any easier for AC, to peak for both but what he lacks in fitness, he can make up for in creativity and a swashbuckling racing style that goes for the jugular, defends brilliantly and takes advantage of the tiniest opportunities (Fuente de, the ITT in this years Vuelta) that others overlook, but that often define a race.

Yes, the Giro has a 60k TT, but I am not sure that SKY can get the 8 other men up and ready for a GT the way that Astana and Saxo can- and we saw this year that Saxo had some real personnel issues, and Astana will have to keep Aru onside, so SKY is really going to be up against it….Also, it takes time to sort out the pecking order, and with so many new signings, I am not sure that SHY will be the smooth robot it has been in the past few years by the Giro. But by the TdF all systems will almost certainly be GO!

Nope…Froome will be at the TdF thank you very much, and they will send one of the new signings to lead at the Giro for training to support Froome at the TdF thank you very much. SKY will continue to suck at the Classics, Froome will continue to (a) fall off his bike (elbows first) as he contemplates his power meter, gets swamped by the peloton and is stuck behind some dodgy wheel or another, (b) Utterly shred the peloton with his trademark (and amazing- lets not forget amazing!) high cadence attacks in the high mountains and (c) follow the SKY-bots at their amazing pace, prior to going on the attack. A leaopard cannot change his stripes….

Alberto Contador of course is a sniper, and camoflage expert, and blends into whatever race context he happens to be in at the time. He of course will continue to outthink, out-race, out-compete and outclass them all with style, panache, bravery, incredible fitness, huge self belief, and dancing on the pedals. He will (barring crash, injury or illness) certainly win at least one of those GTs in 2015…

    Should be fun!
