of all the names you mention, perhaps I’m only surprised that Sagan doesn’t want to try to add the Maglia whateveritis to the Green jersey – I guess having Cannondale as a sponsor puts California higher in the pecking order (and he’s done well there before so I guess he has a following stateside). Similarly with Wiggins it’s as much about 20th Century Fox as anything else. I’m not sure you’re right about Porte tho – he’s clearly been off-colour, so why flog yourself into the road in Italy, when you can get back to basics and get healthy for the Tour. Sky have been unlucky with the Henao situation – as has he, if it’s a genuine problem – as he would be leading the team. It does feel odd for the leading stage race team to be so weak in the GC contenders… maybe Ben Swift nicks a couple of stages (hmmm ,,,Kittel…)

“…with Wiggins it’s as much about 20th Century Fox as anything else..” haha great line, wish i’d thought of it…! Porte’s a funny one, on and off all the time, but i did read he wasn’t happy at getting pulled. i doubt he’d win this year tho even if in top form. thanks for the comment Noel.

I’m always a bit surprised when the American GC guys (that really have no chance in the Tour) chose to do California and the Tour. Why not the Giro/Vuelta double, then come back to the Tour the following year. It would give them more experience riding for GC, maybe make them a bit stronger and give them a better chance to get results. I do like watching the Giro, in my mind it is 1a, 1b with the Vuelta. To move TOC to September would be a shame, the Vuelta is such an exciting race to follow.
Porte obviously wasn’t having much luck this spring, when he gets healthy he will get his chances. I also see plenty of big names riding the Giro this year, just because Contador and Froome aren’t there isn’t a big deal. Plus, even though Cavendish is a big name doesn’t mean he is the best sprinter now. Kittel is indeed riding in Italy. My bet is that Cadel does better in the Giro than TJ does in Tour. However it might finally be Purito’s year. Great blog BTW

thanks Doug! Giro/Vuelta does sound good, but as others have noted the Tour has taken over completely in the team manager’s and sponsor’s heads. it’s just the way it is, and i think Acquarone getting bumped is a real shame, he had the charisma needed to attract riders and to generate some hoopla. Porte, as i said to Noel, he’s too wishy washy, too delicate. never know which Porte’s gonna turn up…
