Dave came onboard the good ship Crank Punk Coaching Systems in March 2021 more or less as a novice. Recommended by his friend and long time CPCS client Taylor Price (thanks TP), Dave had never competed in a race and had not been cycling long at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Dave lacked in experience he more than made up for in motivation and desire, and he’s been a joy to work with all the way. His enthusiasm for cycling and racing is infectious. Dave’s numbers were soon on the up, thanks in part to his natural talent – I say ‘in part’, because without consistency talent means very little. Put those two together and things get moving upowards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever work I put into his plan, Dave gets it done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also learnt quickly to ‘self-coach’: this is the ability to intuitively hear what your body and specifically the legs are telling you on a given day, in-ride, and to be able to adjust accordingly. This is a crucial element of training, and it’s quite simple… in theory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a day when the legs aren’t firing, dial back the effort to still get the workout done. When the legs are good, raise the limits. Sounds simple, but so many riders will ride themselves into the ground trying to hit the ‘golden number’ (ie the watts demanded on a hard interval) on a day when their legs aren’t capable of reaching that number. Dave however does this very well, which makes my job a lot easier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave wasn’t interested in paddling around in the shallow end. Instead he jumped in wheels first, taking part in crits, road races and some super long challenge efforts, racking up a host of podiums along the way and the odd win too. Last year he joined the Zone Five Racing Team and has impressed their also. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s early season but his 3rd place in the M40 cat at last weekend’s Wattfest 2023 in Grantsville, Utah was a very good result. Racing in a mixed field is never easy as it’s hard to be sure who is in your cat, but he rode well and posted encouraging numbers too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He managed the 53km effort at 39.1km\/hr, an NP of 258w and at 94% intensity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last ten minutes he raised it up to 309w, another good sign for the season to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I’m a very happy coach and looking forward to what the rest of 2023 bring! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are looking for more podiums this year and on the top spot too, as well as qualifying for the World Masters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
