La Haine<\/em> (1995, dir. <\/em>Matthieu Kassovitz) is one of crankpunk’s favorite films. set across Paris and filmed in stunning black and white, it follows three friends from a housing estate as they struggle to come to terms with police brutality, poverty and a searing sense of hopelesness. in it, a character called Hubert gets philosophical and delivers these memorable lines:<\/p>\n

Heard about the guy who fell off a skyscraper? On his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself: So far so good… so far so good… so far so good. How you fall doesn’t matter. It’s how you land!<\/em><\/p>\n

Hubert didn’t have to add that the landing was messy. like, dead messy. you can be as optimistic as you like in life, and it’s an admirable way of looking at things, no doubt, but sometimes no amount of positive thinking is going to change the outcome. and so it is with Lance. he can tweet to his heart’s content, displaying his jerseys and his bulbous ego, but there is nothing else left for him anymore.<\/p>\n
